The story
Union Station was the Northern Pacific Railroad's grand terminal in Tacoma, the city the railroad chose in 1873 as the western end of its northern line across the continent. Reed and Stem, who were designing New York's Grand Central Terminal at the same time, designed it; it was built between 1909 and May 1911, and the Great Northern and the Union Pacific shared it. Its 90-foot copper dome became the emblem of the city. The last passenger train left on June 14, 1984; after a lease arranged in 1987 and three years of restoration, the federal courts moved in in 1992. The rotunda keeps its clock, marble fountains and wooden benches, and from the dome hangs Dale Chihuly's 20-foot chandelier of more than 2,700 glass globes.
The public lobby is open weekdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on federal holidays. Bring a government-issued photo ID; no food or liquids through security, and no photographs or recording inside.

Union Station fue la gran terminal del ferrocarril Northern Pacific en Tacoma, la ciudad que la compañía eligió en 1873 como extremo occidental de su línea norte a través del continente.
