Dale Chihuly

Dale Chihuly was born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1941 and took glassblowing from a craft into large scale sculpture: chandeliers, towers, and forests of blown glass in every color. In 1976, in England, a head-on car crash threw him through the windshield and cost him the sight in his left eye.

His permanent exhibition in Seattle, Chihuly Garden and Glass, opened in May 2012 at Seattle Center, directly beside the Space Needle, with galleries, a glasshouse and a garden where the glass grows among real plants. Our Seattle walk has a practical tip for the pair: if cloud hides the view from the Needle's top, spend the money on Chihuly next door instead and come back for the view another day.
