The story
The Prairie Line was the Northern Pacific's line from Kalama on the Columbia River to Commencement Bay, finished on December 16, 1873, three days before the railroad would have lost a vast federal land grant. HistoryLink records Chinese crews levelling the land with picks, shovels and shoulder-pole buckets, and the City of Tacoma's trail site counts more than 750 Chinese workers among its builders. The last freight train crossed the University of Washington Tacoma campus in 2003, and the rails now run through a public trail. The campus, opened in 1997, reuses historic warehouses along Pacific Avenue. On the trail, the sculpture Maru by Gerard Tsutakawa remembers Nihongo Gakko, the Japanese Language School, where Tacoma's Japanese Americans were made to register before their forced removal in 1942.
