The story
Peter Faneuil gave Boston this market hall in 1742, and the money behind the gift came from Atlantic shipping tied to the slave trade. The city has argued for years over whether the name should stay. The exhibit inside now tells both halves, which is the honest way to stand here.
Look up before you walk in. The gilded grasshopper on the roof is the only piece of the 1742 building never altered. Shem Drowne hammered it from copper and gave it glass doorknobs for eyes, borrowing the idea from the Royal Exchange in London. Fire gutted the hall in 1761, and Charles Bulfinch widened it from three bays to seven in 1806. The grasshopper sat through all of it.
Almost everyone eats in Quincy Market, opened 1826, and never climbs the stairs. The Great Hall on the second floor is free, still holds citizenship ceremonies, and is usually quiet.
