The story
Most people come to the North End for the cannoli line on Hanover Street. Walk down to Commercial Street on the water side instead, to the ball field at Langone Park. This ground was 529 Commercial Street, where a steel tank fifty feet tall held 2.3 million gallons of molasses. At about half past noon on January 15, 1919, it split open. The wave came down the street at an estimated thirty five miles an hour, killed twenty one people and injured a hundred and fifty.
The tank had never been properly filled with water to test it for leaks. When it seeped at the seams, the company painted the outside brown so the drips would not show. Three years of hearings ended with the owner, United States Industrial Alcohol, held responsible and about $600,000 paid in settlement.
A small plaque at the entrance to Puopolo Park is the only marker. Hanover Street is shoulder to shoulder by six. This corner is quiet at any hour.
