A four-story Giant Ocean Tank spirals through a Caribbean reef with sea turtles, sharks and rays, right on the harbor.
The story
The Giant Ocean Tank came first. Engineers built the 200,000 gallon cylinder, then raised the aquarium around it, which is why the whole building works as a spiral. You follow a ramp that winds down four stories around the glass, and the reef changes as you descend. It opened on June 20, 1969, and more than 12,000 people came through on the first day.
Myrtle, a green sea turtle, moved in the following June and has been here ever since. Biologists put her age between 75 and 95, which makes her decades older than the aquarium itself.
In 2013 the tank was drained for ten months and rebuilt for $17.3 million. The reef went back in with about 2,000 animals.
Look from the top windows first, then walk down slowly. Most people hurry the ramp and see the same fish four times.
