The story
Yavapai Observation Station was dedicated in July 1928. Architect Herbert C. Maier designed it on a site chosen by a team of geologists, and built it of local Kaibab limestone and ponderosa pine so that it would blend into the rim. Its designers wanted to make the out of doors intelligible.
That is still the point. Stand at the great window with the relief model of the canyon in the front room behind you, and match one to the other. The exhibits were renewed when it was rededicated on May 24, 2007. In 1931 park staff planted a memorial tree here for Stephen Mather.
When you leave heading west, the Rim Trail becomes the Trail of Time, dedicated in 2010, where each meter stands for a million years. The rim rock under your feet is about 270 million years old, the oldest rock at the bottom about 1.8 billion, and the canyon itself was carved only in the last five or six million years.

La Estación de Observación Yavapai se inauguró en julio de 1928. El arquitecto Herbert C. Maier la diseñó en un lugar elegido por un equipo de geólogos y la construyó con caliza Kaibab local y pino ponderosa para que se fundiera con el borde. Sus diseñadores querían hacer inteligible el aire libre.
