A curio shop of 1906, run by one family for a century, now a National Park Service visitor center on the history of life on the rim.
The story
John Verkamp first sold souvenirs from a tent on the rim in 1898 and gave up at the end of that summer. After the railroad spur arrived in 1901 he came back, built this building in 1905 with supplies shipped from Los Angeles, and opened for business on January 31, 1906. His ledger for that first day reads $4.98, A Good Day.
The family ran it for just over a hundred years, buying from some of the same Native American artisans for 25 to 50 years. The Park Service bought the building and reopened it as a visitor center in November 2008.
Inside, a timeline on the floor leads through the exhibits on the people who lived and worked on the rim, and a silent film shows the family's home movies from the 1950s and 1960s. It is the closest visitor center to the train depot.

John Verkamp vendió recuerdos por primera vez desde una tienda de campaña en el borde en 1898 y lo dejó al terminar aquel verano.
