The story
For most people this is the first look into the Grand Canyon. On a clear day you can see more than 30 miles to the east and 60 miles to the west, and pick out bits of the Colorado River and Phantom Ranch far below.
The point is named for Stephen Tyng Mather, a wealthy Chicago businessman who became the first director of the National Park Service in 1917 and left office in 1929.
At the Village the canyon is ten miles from rim to rim, up to eighteen elsewhere, and about a vertical mile deep. It is not the deepest canyon in the world; the Park Service names Barranca del Cobre in Mexico and Hells Canyon in Idaho as deeper.
Mather Point is a classic spot for sunrise and sunset. The paved trail and the main overlook are wheelchair accessible, and the point is about five to ten minutes on foot from the Visitor Center. Keep at least six feet back from the edge.
