The story
Start here, on the plaza by the shuttle terminal. The Visitor Center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with rangers, restrooms and water, and outdoor exhibits for when the building is shut.
Two free films of 24 minutes play inside. We Are Grand Canyon, made with the park's eleven tribal communities, plays at the top of each hour, a reminder that the canyon is a home and a sacred landscape to living nations, not only a view. The orientation film plays on the half hour.
Grand Canyon became a national park in 1919, three years after the Park Service was created, and had 44,173 visitors that year. In 2025 it had 4,430,653. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1979.
In busy periods parking lots 1 to 4 fill by 10 a.m. The free shuttles have run here for more than 40 years, on compressed natural gas, and the first canyon view, Mather Point, is a short walk north.
