The story
Winslow began in the 1870s as Madrone, named for a madrona tree by the dock, and Riley and Martha Hoskinson, who came in 1878, are counted as its founders. By 1900 the church, the school, the grocery and a steamer dock at the foot of Madison Avenue stood here, west of the ravine that split the town. In 1908 Lincoln School was built at this corner, and its first class reached the twelfth grade in 1914, the island's first high school.
The Hall Brothers shipyard broke ground on the harbor in 1902, and the town took the name of the late Winslow Hall. Winslow became a city in 1947, annexed the whole island in 1990 by 3,193 votes to 3,057, and in 1991 its voters renamed the city Bainbridge Island. Winslow Way is its main street, with cafes, bakeries and a bookshop.

Winslow empezó en la década de 1870 como Madrone, llamado así por un madroño junto al muelle, y a Riley y Martha Hoskinson, que llegaron en 1878, se los considera sus fundadores.
