The story
The Bainbridge History Museum's largest object is its home: a one room schoolhouse built at Island Center in 1908. It closed as a school in 1923 and became the high school's band and choir room, was given to the museum in 1972 and moved to Strawberry Hill Park, and in 2004 came here to Ericksen Avenue with the building added behind it in 1997.
Its permanent exhibit, Our Community: Past to Present, follows thirteen island communities, among them the Suquamish, whose ancestors lived in this landscape at least 14,000 years ago, the Japanese American farmers who grew the island's famous strawberries, the Filipino American and Indipino families, and the three friends who invented pickleball here in 1965. It is free, open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and wheelchair accessible.
