The story
Waterfront Park is the city's 5.5 acre park on Eagle Harbor, with lawns, a play area, groves of madrones whose old bark peels to show red underneath, and the rebuilt city dock, nearly 900 feet long, opened in 2018. The Suquamish Tribe counts Eagle Harbor among its winter villages, and the harbor lies within its treaty protected fishing area.
East along the shore stood the Hall Brothers shipyard, which employed 2,300 people in the Second World War and closed in 1959. West along the city's waterfront trail, Strawberry Plant Park marks a cannery where, in 1940, two hundred workers packed two million pounds of island strawberries; the city's trail map says the war and the exclusion of Americans of Japanese ancestry ended it. The park is open for day use.
