The story
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney offered her collection of more than five hundred works by American artists to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When the Met declined, she founded her own museum in 1930, devoted only to the art of this country, and it opened on West Eighth Street in 1931.
After homes on West 54th Street and in Marcel Breuer's building on Madison Avenue, the Whitney moved into this Renzo Piano building beside the High Line, which opened on May 1, 2015. Stand under the cantilevered entrance, which shelters a public plaza the museum calls the largo, then start at the top. The museum suggests the eighth floor terrace first, working down by the stairs. It owns more than three thousand works by Edward Hopper, with a selection always on view on the seventh floor.
The ground floor is free. The museum is open 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., until 10 p.m. on Fridays, and closed on Tuesdays. Adults pay $30, visitors 25 and under go free, and everyone is free on Friday evenings and the second Sunday of the month, with a ticket.
