A free public park on concrete tulip-shaped columns in the Hudson, at Pier 55 between 13th and 14th Streets.
The story
Little Island stands on concrete columns shaped like tulip pots, and the idea came from the old wooden pilings of Pier 54 that you can still see in the water beside it. Pier 54 was the Cunard White Star pier. In 1912 the rescue ship Carpathia brought Titanic survivors ashore here, and in 1915 the Lusitania sailed from it. The steel archway at the South Bridge entrance survives from the old Cunard White Star building. From the 1970s into the early 1980s, these abandoned piers were a safe gathering place for New York's LGBTQ community.
After Hurricane Sandy damaged the pier, Barry Diller and the Hudson River Park Trust set out in 2013 to reimagine it, and the Diller von Furstenberg Family Foundation funded a new park designed by Heatherwick Studio, with landscape design by Signe Nielsen of MNLA. It opened on May 21, 2021.
The park is free, and only performances in The Amph need tickets. It opens at 6 a.m. every day and closes between 9 p.m. and midnight depending on the season, so check littleisland.org for tonight's time.
