The story
Take the stairs or the elevator up from Pier 57's south entrance, across from Little Island, and you reach one of New York's largest public rooftop parks, nearly two acres of lawn and decking that opened in the spring of 2022. The views run south to Lower Manhattan and the harbor.
The pier under your feet was first built in 1907 as a shipping and storage terminal. After a large fire, the city rebuilt it in 1952 to a design by the engineer Emil H. Praeger, who set it on three hollow concrete caissons instead of the usual piles, which is why its own history calls it an engineering marvel. It reopened in 1954 as the Grace Line terminal, later became the Hudson Pier bus depot, and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A partnership including the Hudson River Park Trust, Google, RXR, Youngwoo and Associates and Jamestown reopened the pier on April 1, 2023, with the Market 57 food hall on the ground floor. The pier lists the rooftop as open daily from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., which makes it an easy sunset stop.
