The story
White Point Garden is a public park of 5.7 acres at the southern tip of the Charleston peninsula, beside the Battery seawall, where the Ashley and Cooper Rivers meet the harbor.
Look out to the harbor mouth for the low shape of Fort Sumter. At 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861, Confederate batteries opened fire on it and kept firing for 34 hours. No one died in the bombardment; a Union soldier was killed when a gun exploded during the surrender salute.
The point has an older story too. In 1718 the pirate Stede Bonnet and his crew were hanged near here, and a monument marks it. Twenty nine of the crew were sentenced to death, but the evidence suggests only 22 were hanged.
The white bandstand at the center was finished in 1907 for more than $5,000 and opened with a Carolina Day concert on June 28 that year. Among the monuments, several honor the Confederacy; they were raised by later generations. A memorial to the 176 sailors of the USS Hobson, lost in 1952, stands on stones from their 38 home states.
