Thirteen painted Georgian row houses at 79 to 107 East Bay Street, restored from the 1930s and now the most photographed street front in Charleston.
The story
Rainbow Row is thirteen historic houses on East Bay Street, running from number 79 to number 107, each painted its own pastel.
The walls are old. A fire in 1778 destroyed much of this neighborhood, and only the houses at 95 to 101 East Bay survived it. The rest were rebuilt, and the southernmost building dates from about 1845, the youngest in the row.
The colors are newer. In July 1931 Judge Lionel K. Legge and Dorothy Porcher Legge began restoring 99 to 101 East Bay, and she painted them pink after a colonial Caribbean color scheme. Neighbors followed, and by 1945 most of the row had been restored. What you see is a twentieth century rescue laid over eighteenth century walls, which is the story of the whole historic district in one street.
These are private homes. Take your pictures from the sidewalk and leave the steps and doorways to the people who live here.
