The story

Stand at Broad and Meeting Streets and turn around once. Robert Ripley of Ripley's Believe It or Not called this crossroads the Four Corners of Law in the 1930s, because each corner holds a different law: St. Michael's Church for the church, City Hall of 1800 to 1804 for the city, the County Courthouse, first built in 1753 as the provincial statehouse and rebuilt in 1792, for the state, and the federal building of 1896 for the nation.

St. Michael's was built between 1751 and 1761 and is the oldest surviving religious building in Charleston. George Washington worshipped in pew 43 in 1791. The bells were cast in London in 1764 and recast in London in 1866. The organ by John Snetzler was installed in 1768, and its case survives. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1961.

It is a living church. Visitors are welcome Monday to Thursday, and never during worship.
