The story
San Francisco Travel tells visitors not to miss Waverly Place and its painted balconies. The block rewards looking up: above ordinary shop fronts, balconies in red, green and gold, lanterns and gilded signs mark the rooms where the community meets.
Upstairs at number 125 is the Tin How Temple, a working Taoist temple. Tin How is the Cantonese reading of Tian Hou, Queen of Heaven, a title of Mazu. UNESCO, which inscribed Mazu belief and customs on its list of intangible heritage in 2009, calls her the most influential goddess of the sea in China: a young woman of Meizhou Island in the tenth century, who died trying to rescue the survivors of a shipwreck.
For people who crossed the Pacific by ship to reach this city, she was the goddess who kept travelers safe. Treat the temple as the place of worship it is.
