The story
Portsmouth Square was the plaza of Yerba Buena, the small settlement platted around 1835 that became San Francisco. In 1846 the American flag was raised here, and the square was renamed for the USS Portsmouth.
The city's own history lists it as the place the discovery of gold was proclaimed, the home of California's first public school and the site of the first City Hall. After the 1906 earthquake and fire it became a camp for people who had lost their homes.
For more than a century it has been Chinatown's living room. Since June 2026 it has been fenced off for a rebuild planned with the community: a stage, a larger clubhouse, shade and a new playground, with the footbridge over Kearny Street taken down. The city expects it to reopen around mid-2028.

Portsmouth Square fue la plaza de Yerba Buena, el pequeño asentamiento trazado hacia 1835 que se convirtió en San Francisco. En 1846 se izó aquí la bandera estadounidense y la plaza recibió el nombre del USS Portsmouth.
La propia historia de la ciudad la presenta como el lugar donde se proclamó el descubrimiento del oro, la sede de la primera escuela pública de California y el sitio del primer ayuntamiento. Tras el terremoto y el incendio de 1906 se convirtió en un campamento para quienes lo habían perdido todo.
Desde hace más de un siglo es la sala de estar de Chinatown.
