The story

The Chinese Historical Society of America was founded in 1963, when, it says, fewer than 250,000 people of Chinese descent lived in the United States. Its museum is in the landmarked Chinatown YWCA at 965 Clay Street, designed by Julia Morgan, and its collection holds nearly 22,000 Chinese and Chinese American historical artifacts.

This is the place to hear the Chinese Exclusion Act told plainly. The National Archives calls the act of May 6, 1882 the first significant law restricting immigration into the United States. It barred Chinese laborers for ten years and denied Chinese immigrants citizenship; it was renewed in 1892, made permanent in 1902 and repealed only in 1943, with a quota of 105 a year.

The museum is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays only.
