Greenwich Village's central square, once a potter's field and a parade ground, framed by Stanford White's marble arch at the foot of Fifth Avenue.
The story
Stand by the fountain and face the arch. Under your feet is a burial ground. From 1797 to 1825 this was the city's potter's field, and NYC Parks estimates that about 20,000 people were buried here, most of them poor or alone, and they remain under the lawns. Before that, in the 1640s, Africans freed by the Dutch West India Company farmed this land, which became known as the Land of the Blacks, until the English took those rights away. In 1826 the field became a militia parade ground, and in 1827 a public square. The marble arch, by Stanford White, was built from 1890 to 1892 to replace a plaster and wood arch put up in 1889 for the centennial of George Washington's inauguration. On a January night in 1917, John Sloan, Marcel Duchamp, the poet Gertrude Drick and three actors slipped inside it, climbed to the roof and declared the Free and Independent Republic of Washington Square. The Hangman's Elm in the northwest corner is a legend, not an execution site: the park's only documented hanging, of Rose Butler in 1818, was at the gallows. In the early 1960s, neighbors including Jane Jacobs and Shirley Hayes forced cars out of the park for good.
