The Renee and Chaim Gross Foundation is a non-profit organization incorporated in 1989 dedicated to the study of modern American sculptor Chaim Gross (1902–91), his contemporaries, and the history of 20th-century American art. It is located in the sculptor's four-story historic home on LaGuardia Place in Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighborhood and is open to the public.
The story
Half a block south of Washington Square, at 526 LaGuardia Place, a four-story brick building from 1873 spent decades as an industrial loft. In 1962 the sculptor Chaim Gross and his wife Renee bought it and rebuilt it as one thing: home upstairs, workshop on the ground floor, with a modernist skylight cut in to light the carving. Gross worked in that studio from 1963 until he died in 1991, and the tools are still where he left them.
He carved direct, straight into wood and stone with no clay model first, a method he helped bring to American sculpture in the late 1920s. A wrong cut is permanent, which is the whole point of it.
Go up to the third floor for what most visitors miss: the couple's own living room, hung with the art they collected, including Milton Avery, Marsden Hartley, Willem de Kooning and Jacob Lawrence.
Guided one-hour tours only, eight people maximum, September through June. Book at least a day ahead.

A media cuadra al sur de Washington Square, en el 526 de LaGuardia Place, hay un edificio de ladrillo de cuatro plantas de 1873 que durante décadas fue un loft industrial. En 1962 el escultor Chaim Gross y su esposa Renee lo compraron y lo rehicieron como una sola cosa: la vivienda arriba y el taller en la planta baja, con un tragaluz modernista abierto para iluminar el tallado. Gross trabajó en ese taller desde 1963 hasta su muerte en 1991, y las herramientas siguen donde él las dejó.
