The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture is an art school located at 8 West 8th Street in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, New York, US. It was formed in 1963 by a group of students and their teacher, Mercedes Matter, all of whom had become disenchanted with the fragmented nature of art instruction inside traditional art programs and universities. Today it occupies the building that previously housed the Whitney Museum of American Art.
The story
Stand at 8 West 8th Street and you are in the doorway where American art got its own museum. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney ran a studio and club for living American artists here from 1914. In 1929 she offered more than 500 works to the Metropolitan Museum, which turned the gift down. So she built her own. The Whitney Museum of American Art opened on this block on 18 November 1931 and stayed until 1954, when it moved uptown.
The building did not go quiet. In 1963 the painter Mercedes Matter and a group of her students founded the New York Studio School here, worn out by art taught in disconnected courses. It gave no degrees at first. Students drew from life, all day. Philip Guston, Alex Katz and Esteban Vicente taught in these rooms.
Almost everyone walks past. The ground-floor gallery is free and open to the public, so go in.
