The story
The Prudential Tower went up in 1964 on twenty-eight acres that had been the Boston and Albany Railroad's freight yard. At 749 feet it ended the Custom House Tower's fifty-nine year run as the tallest thing in Boston. The old Skywalk observatory on the 50th floor closed in 2020 after fifty-four years. What replaced it is not a refit: View Boston cost $182 million, took four years to build, and opened on June 15, 2023 across the top three floors.
Ride to 52 first, where the elevator doors open straight onto glass. The part worth the ticket is one floor down. The Cloud Terrace on 51 is open air and wraps the whole building, so wind and weather decide how long you last up there. Floor 50 holds the projected city model and the bistro. Come up about ninety minutes before sunset, walk the outdoor deck while the light is still on the harbor, then go inside for the model.
