McKim's 1895 palace for the people, Free to All carved over the door: Bates Hall's green lamps under a 50-foot barrel vault, Sargent's murals upstairs, and a Roman courtyard at the center.
The story
Above the Dartmouth Street doors it says Free to All. That was not decoration. Joshua Bates, a London banker born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, gave $50,000 in 1852 and wrote the motto into the terms of the gift. A person who works with their hands was to get the same room as a scholar.
The room he paid for is Bates Hall, 218 feet long under a 50-foot barrel vault. Almost everyone photographs it and leaves, and that is the mistake. Up the stairs is the Abbey Room, the old book delivery hall, where fifteen painted panels of Galahad's quest for the Grail surrounded you while you waited for your book to come out. One more flight up, the Sargent Gallery is usually near empty.
The marble lions on the staircase were paid for by Civil War veterans of two Massachusetts regiments, for their dead.
Come in from Dartmouth Street, not Boylston, or you walk the building backwards. The courtyard, modeled on a Roman palace, is the quiet seat.
