A city campus in the Fenway, built around co-op terms that send students out to work for a living
The story
Northeastern began in 1898 as evening classes in the Huntington Avenue YMCA, for men who already had jobs. That origin never left. In 1909 it built its degrees around cooperative education: students alternate terms of study with terms of paid full-time work, so a five-year degree here contains eighteen months of somebody's actual payroll.
What it means for the campus is that a third of the students are somewhere else at any given moment, which is why it feels calmer than its enrolment suggests.
The grounds are open and cross the block between Huntington Avenue and Ruggles station, so people walk through without noticing they have. The Museum of Fine Arts is five minutes on foot from the west edge, and Symphony Hall about the same, which makes this the shortest link between two things most visitors treat as separate trips.

Northeastern empezó en 1898 como clases nocturnas en el YMCA de Huntington Avenue, para hombres que ya tenían trabajo. Ese origen nunca se fue. En 1909 construyó sus títulos alrededor de la educación cooperativa: los estudiantes alternan semestres de estudio con semestres de trabajo remunerado a tiempo completo, así que una carrera de cinco años aquí contiene dieciocho meses de nómina real.
Para el campus eso significa que un tercio de los estudiantes está en otra parte en cualquier momento, y por eso resulta más tranquilo de lo que sugiere su matrícula.

Northeastern khởi đầu năm 1898 là các lớp buổi tối trong YMCA trên Đại lộ Huntington, dành cho những người đã đi làm. Gốc gác ấy chưa bao giờ mất. Năm 1909 trường dựng các bằng cấp của mình quanh mô hình học kết hợp làm: sinh viên xen kẽ những kỳ học với những kỳ làm việc toàn thời gian có lương, nên một tấm bằng năm năm ở đây chứa mười tám tháng lương thật.
