The story
Heatherwick Studio was asked for a public centerpiece at Hudson Yards and chose something you climb rather than just look at. The inspiration was the stepwells of Rajasthan in India, where flight after flight of stone stairs reaches down into the ground. Here the stairs rise into the air instead.
The studio counts about 2,500 steps, 154 flights and 80 landings over sixteen storeys, all fabricated in Venice, Italy, by the steel specialist Cimolai. It opened in March 2019. After a closure in 2021, it reopened in October 2024 with floor to ceiling steel mesh on the upper levels, so today the full circuit is open only on the lowest levels, with the mesh fitted parts higher up and a single platform at the top.
Every visitor needs a ticket with a date or a time, children five and under go free, and New York City residents can book free tickets on Thursdays. The operator's own pages list different opening hours, so check vesselnyc.com on the day. Even without a ticket, stand at the base and look straight up through the center.
