The story
The Spur was the last piece of the original rail structure to become park, and it nearly did not survive. Friends of the High Line began a Save the Spur campaign in 2008, and the section finally opened on June 5, 2019. Look for the old rails set into the plaza. This branch once carried freight trains to the upper floor loading docks of the Morgan postal building on 30th Street.
The centerpiece is the Plinth, which the High Line calls the first space in the park set aside only for a rotating series of new monumental artworks, each on view for about eighteen months. It was inspired by the Fourth Plinth in London's Trafalgar Square.
The fifth commission, installed in 2026, is Tuan Andrew Nguyen's The Light That Shines Through the Universe, a 27 foot figure that pays homage to the sixth century Bamiyan Buddhas of Afghanistan, destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. Its hands, reported to be cast from artillery brass, stand apart from the sandstone body. Walk around it slowly, then sit on the wooden steps and watch Tenth Avenue below.
