The story
The quilted shell in front of you is built to move. The Shed, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Rockwell Group and opened in April 2019, is a fixed eight level building wrapped in a telescoping outer shell that rolls out on rails over the plaza beside it.
Look down and you will see the rails. The architects say they adapted gantry crane technology, the kind used in ports and rail yards, as a nod to the industrial past of the High Line and the rail yard underneath. Rolled out, the shell makes a hall of about 17,200 square feet called The McCourt. Rolled back, the same ground becomes an open plaza of about 19,500 square feet.
The pale cushions of the skin are ETFE, a plastic that insulates roughly like glass at a fraction of the weight, which matters when a building travels on wheels. The architects also credit the Fun Palace, an unbuilt building machine dreamed up in the 1960s by Cedric Price and Joan Littlewood, a structure meant to be rearranged for whatever came next.
