The story
Stand on West 34th Street and you are at the only place where the High Line's gardens run straight down to meet the sidewalk. The planting here copies the plants that seeded themselves on the abandoned tracks, and a young Gold Russet apple tree remembers a wild apple that once fruited at this northern end with nobody tending it.
Now look south. That is Hudson Yards, built on 28 acres over a working rail yard. Its platforms bridge 30 active tracks, and about 300 caissons are drilled into the bedrock between them, some as deep as 80 feet. The trains kept running the whole time it was built.
The Rail Yards section of the park, between 30th and 34th Streets, opened in 2014 with a deliberately simple temporary walkway. The High Line closed that northern walkway for rebuilding in the fall of 2025, and it says a new 34th Street garden by Field Operations and Piet Oudolf will open late in 2026. If the gate is shut when you arrive, take in the view from the street, then walk on into Hudson Yards.
