The story
Tufts sits on a hill in Medford, and the free thing worth the climb is the view back at the Boston skyline from the top of the campus. The stranger thing is the mascot.
P. T. Barnum gave the university the mounted hide of Jumbo, the circus elephant killed by a locomotive at St. Thomas, Ontario, on 15 September 1885. Jumbo stood in Barnum Hall for decades and became the school's mascot, which is why Tufts teams are the Jumbos. In April 1975 a fire destroyed the hide.
What survived is the part people remember. Ashes believed to be Jumbo's are kept in a 14-ounce Peter Pan crunchy peanut butter jar in the athletic director's office. The tail is held separately in the university archives.

Tufts está en una colina de Medford, y lo gratis que justifica la subida es la vista de la silueta de Boston desde lo alto del campus. Lo más raro es la mascota.
P. T. Barnum regaló a la universidad la piel montada de Jumbo, el elefante de circo al que mató una locomotora en St. Thomas, Ontario, el 15 de septiembre de 1885. Jumbo estuvo décadas en el Barnum Hall y se convirtió en la mascota de la escuela, por eso los equipos de Tufts son los Jumbos. En abril de 1975 un incendio destruyó la piel.
