The Glass Flowers, thousands of impossibly lifelike glass plants the Blaschkas crafted over fifty years, plus whale skeletons in the Great Mammal Hall and the world's only mounted Kronosaurus.
The story
People come for the dinosaurs and leave talking about a room of flowers made of glass. The Ware Collection is the work of two men, Leopold Blaschka and his son Rudolf, Czech glass artists working from a studio at Hosterwitz outside Dresden. Between 1886 and 1936 they produced about 4,300 models representing 780 plant species. Leopold died in 1895, and Rudolf carried the commission alone for another forty years.
They were made to solve a teaching problem. A pressed specimen loses its shape and its colour, and a botany student in a Massachusetts January still needs to see the plant as it actually grows.
Elizabeth Ware and her daughter Mary Lee Ware paid for the commission and gave it to Harvard as a memorial.
Get close to the glass. From across the room they look like flowers, which is not the impressive part. The impressive part is that at six inches they still do.
