A one-day loop across the river, six stops in walking-and-Red-Line order: Harvard Yard and the free Harvard Art Museums in the morning, the Glass Flowers next door, Mount Auburn's garden cemetery, then MIT's Great Dome, the Infinite Corridor and the Kendall Square museum to close the afternoon.
The story
This loop is built around one object most visitors have never heard of. In the Harvard Museum of Natural History are the Glass Flowers: 4,300 models of 780 plant species, made in glass by Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka, father and son, working in Germany from 1886 to 1936 for Harvard alone. Professor George Lincoln Goodale commissioned them because pressed specimens lose their shape and wax models sag. Mary Lee Ware and her mother Elizabeth paid for fifty years of it.
Start in Harvard Yard in the morning, then the Harvard Art Museums, which are free. The Glass Flowers are next door. Take bus 71 or 73 out to Mount Auburn and its garden cemetery, then the Red Line two stops to Kendall for MIT, the Great Dome and the Infinite Corridor.
Do the museums before lunch. Cambridge is a walking day, so wear the right shoes.
