The story
Visitors line up to photograph the John Harvard statue, and nearly all of them are standing in front of three mistakes. The inscription reads John Harvard, Founder, 1638. He was not the founder, he was the first major benefactor, leaving half his estate and some four hundred books. The college was founded in 1636. And no likeness of him survives, so when Daniel Chester French sculpted the figure in 1883 he posed a student named Sherman Hoar instead. Students call it the Statue of Three Lies. The statue itself only arrived beside University Hall in 1924.
The oldest building still standing here is Massachusetts Hall, put up between 1718 and 1720.
One thread worth pulling. French also carved the seated Lincoln in Washington and cast the bronze doors at the Boston Public Library, so if you are doing both cities you have now met the same sculptor three times.
