The story

In 1883, coming down from the summit, James Longmire found mineral springs in this meadow and made them a resort: a mining claim, bath houses, guest cabins by 1889 and a hotel, advertised as a cure for rheumatism and much else. His son Elcaine Longmire built the one room cabin on the trail in 1888, 13 by 16 feet; the Civilian Conservation Corps replaced its logs in kind in 1934 and the park gave it a new roof and foundation in 1970, so none of the original materials remain.

Iron Mike Springs is named for the iron that stains it orange; Soda Springs carries soda, magnesium, iron and salt. Their stonework dates from about 1920. Lab tests later showed the springs were not medicinal, and the National Park Service bought out the Longmires in 1939. The park calls the meadow a unique low elevation meadow created by volcanic mineral springs.
