The story
The Longmire Museum is the building Mount Rainier National Park was first run from. It went up in 1916, served as the superintendent's office for more than ten years, and has been moved twice since, in 1929 and, across the street, in 1977. Outside the door, the rings of a Douglas fir cross section are labelled with dates in history.
Congress established the park on March 2, 1899, the nation's fifth. It was the first national park to let visitors drive in their own cars and to charge an entrance fee, both in 1907, and visits grew from 1,786 in 1906 to 34,814 nine years later. Next door, the 1929 Longmire Service Station, a National Historic Landmark, sold gasoline until 1994 and now holds an exhibit on travel to the park.
The museum is open all year; in winter it issues wilderness permits.

El Museo de Longmire es el edificio desde el que se administró por primera vez el Parque Nacional del Monte Rainier. Se levantó en 1916, fue la oficina del superintendente durante más de diez años y desde entonces se ha trasladado dos veces, en 1929 y, al otro lado de la calle, en 1977. Junto a la puerta, los anillos de una sección de abeto Douglas llevan marcadas fechas de la historia.
El Congreso creó el parque el 2 de marzo de 1899, el quinto del país.
