A riverfront park on the Mississippi, rebuilt in 2023, named for Tom Lee, who rescued 32 people from a capsized steamboat in 1925.
The story
Tom Lee was a Black river worker. On May 8, 1925, the steamboat M. E. Norman capsized on the Mississippi below Memphis, and Tom Lee, who could not swim, took his small boat back to the wreck again and again and brought 32 people to shore. The boat carried members of the Engineers Club of Memphis and their families, and the club later bought Tom Lee and his wife a house. He died in 1952, and two years later this park was named for him.
The park covers 31 acres of the riverfront. It reopened on Labor Day weekend in September 2023 after a $61 million rebuild to a master plan by Studio Gang. David Alan Clark's Tom Lee Memorial shows the rescue.
It is open every day from 6 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset, and the Carlisle Cutbank Bluff gives a step free way down from downtown.

Tom Lee era un trabajador negro del río. El 8 de mayo de 1925 el vapor M. E.
