The story
Memphis Central Station opened to rail passengers in 1914, built for the Illinois Central Railroad and designed by the Chicago firm Graham, Burnham and Company. Look at how it is made: three storeys of buff Bedford limestone at the bottom, and a five storey tower of red brick on top.
Most of the buildings around it on South Main went up between 1910 and 1925, when this district was the city's railroad hub. A restoration was finished in 1999, and in the fall of 2019 part of the station opened as a hotel, keeping the arrival and departure board, the neon signs and the original finishes.
Amtrak trains still stop here. The waiting room is open every day from 5:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 to 11 p.m., with an accessible platform, restrooms and ticket office, though there is no wheelchair lift.
