The Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, now the National Civil Rights Museum.
The story
The Lorraine was a Black owned motel in a segregated city. Walter Bailey bought the old Marquette Hotel in 1945 and named it for his wife, Loree Bailey, and the song Sweet Lorraine. It was listed in the Green Book, and Louis Armstrong, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding stayed here.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came to Memphis in 1968 to support the city's sanitation workers, who went on strike after two of them, Echol Cole and Robert Walker, were crushed to death in a garbage truck on February 1. Their signs read I AM A MAN. On April 3 he preached his last sermon at Mason Temple, and on April 4 he was assassinated on the motel's balcony. The strike ended on April 16.
Walter Bailey never rented Room 306 again. The National Civil Rights Museum opened here in 1991 and traces the movement from slavery to the present; its Legacy Building across the street reopened in May 2026.

沃尔特·贝利从此再没有把306号房租出去。国家民权博物馆1991年在这里开馆,讲述从奴隶制到今天的民权运动;街对面的“遗产楼”于2026年5月重新开放。
