The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World; French: La Liberté éclairant le monde) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture of a robed and crowned woman on Liberty Island, part of New York City, in New York Harbor. The copper-clad statue, a gift to the United States from the people of France, was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and its metal framework built by Gustave Eiffel.
The story
Walk around to her front first. She faces southeast, toward the mouth of the harbor, to greet ships coming in from the sea. The idea came in 1865 from Edouard de Laboulaye, a French political thinker and anti slavery activist, and the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi chose this island in 1871 because every ship entering the harbor had to pass it.
France built the statue. The American committee building the pedestal ran out of money in 1884, and Joseph Pulitzer's New York World rescued it, raising more than $100,000 from about 125,000 people, most giving a dollar or less, and printing every name.
Her copper skin is only 3/32 of an inch thick, about two pennies, hung on an iron frame by Gustave Eiffel. She was unveiled on October 28, 1886, in rain and fog, and she was penny brown then; the green took about thirty years. A broken shackle and chain lie at her feet, where no one on the ground can see them.
The pedestal and the crown need reserved tickets. The crown is 162 steps in a tight spiral with no elevator, and the last entry into the statue is at 4 p.m.

Lớp vỏ đồng chỉ dày 3/32 inch, cỡ hai đồng xu chồng lên nhau, treo trên bộ khung sắt do Gustave Eiffel thiết kế.
