The story

About twelve million people entered America through this island between 1892 and 1954. The first, on January 1, 1892, was Annie Moore, a teenage girl from Ireland travelling with her two younger brothers. That first wooden station burned in 1897, and the brick and limestone hall in front of you opened on December 17, 1900.

Climb to the Registry Room, the Great Hall. On many days more than 5,000 people passed through it. Doctors chalked a letter on the coat of anyone they suspected was ill, and inspectors asked name, home town, occupation, destination and how much money you carried. For most it took a few hours, and only one to two percent were refused. The Guastavino tile vault overhead replaced a plaster ceiling damaged by the Black Tom Wharf explosion of 1916.

First and second class passengers were usually inspected aboard ship. Ellis Island was for steerage. Quota laws in 1921 and 1924 cut arrivals sharply, and the station closed in November 1954.

Most visitors spend one to two hours here. Some galleries close at times for renovation, so check the Park Service's closures page before you come.
