A city owned working theater in the 1809 Planter's Hotel, on the site of the first building in the colonies designed as a theater, which opened in 1736.
The story
On February 12, 1736, a theater on this corner of Church and Queen Streets opened with George Farquhar's comedy The Recruiting Officer. It was the first building in the Thirteen Colonies designed for use as a theater.
The building you see went up in 1809 as the Planter's Hotel. In the Great Depression it became a Works Progress Administration project, and on November 26, 1937 it reopened as a theater, a playhouse in the style of the eighteenth century built inside the old hotel. After a three year, $19 million renovation it opened a third time on March 18, 2010.
It is owned by the City of Charleston and still a working stage: Charleston Stage has been the resident company since 1978. On weekdays you can usually walk into the lobby and courtyard on a self guided visit; in the evening, a performance shows the room at work.
