A 75 minute guided walk through the shopfronts and sidewalks buried when Seattle raised its streets after the fire of 1889.
The story
After the fire of June 6, 1889, Seattle rebuilt in brick and stone and raised its streets out of the tideflat mud. The city built retaining walls eight feet or higher along the old streets, filled between them and paved over the top, so the new streets ran a storey above the old sidewalks. Shopfronts became basements, and hollow passages as high as 35 feet in places were left between old and new.
Bill Speidel ran the first public tours for a single day in May 1965, at a dollar a head, and 500 people came. A petition followed, and in May 1970 the city made 20 blocks of Pioneer Square a historic district.
