The story
Pioneer Square is the small triangle at First Avenue and Yesler Way where Seattle began. Henry Yesler's steam sawmill stood near the foot of Yesler Way from 1852 and 1853, and the town around it burned on June 6, 1889, and was rebuilt in brick and stone.
The iron and glass pergola, designed by Julian Everett, went up in 1909 as a cable car shelter over an underground public toilet, now sealed. A truck flattened it in 2001; it was rebuilt from its own pieces and reopened in 2002.
Seattle businessmen stole the original Tlingit pole from a village in 1899. After an arson fire in 1938, Tlingit carvers led by Charles Brown carved the copy you see, in 1940. The pergola, the pole and the Pioneer Building became national landmarks in 1977.

Pioneer Square es el pequeño triángulo de First Avenue con Yesler Way donde nació Seattle. El aserradero de vapor de Henry Yesler estuvo cerca del extremo de Yesler Way desde 1852 y 1853, y el pueblo que creció a su alrededor ardió el 6 de junio de 1889 y se reconstruyó en ladrillo y piedra.
