L.C. Smith's tower, opened on July 4, 1914, at 469 feet, with an open air observatory and bar on the 35th floor.
The story
Lyman Cornelius Smith, the typewriter maker, bought this odd shaped lot at Second and Yesler in May 1899. He first planned 14 storeys; his son talked him into a skyscraper that would take the title of tallest west of the Mississippi from Tacoma's National Realty Building.
The last rivet of the frame went in on February 15, 1913, and the tower opened on July 4, 1914, at 469 feet, 522 to the tip. Smith did not live to see construction begin. More than 4,000 people rode the original Otis elevator to the 35th floor observatory, which is still open, with a bar, from noon every day.
