A working cathedral begun in 1738 and rebuilt in the Gothic Revival style from 1868, the church San Antonio was planned around.
The story
San Fernando Cathedral's cornerstone was laid on May 11, 1738, and the church was dedicated in 1755. From 1868 François P. Giraud rebuilt it in the Gothic Revival style you see; it was consecrated in 1873, and in 1874 it became the cathedral of the new Diocese of San Antonio. James Bowie married Ursula de Veramendi here in 1831, and in February 1836 Santa Anna raised a flag of no quarter from its tower. A tomb inside is said to hold remains of Alamo defenders; that is disputed. The Main Plaza Conservancy calls it the oldest continuously operating cathedral in the United States.
It is a working church, and Mass comes first.

La primera piedra de la Catedral de San Fernando se colocó el 11 de mayo de 1738, y la iglesia se dedicó en 1755. Desde 1868 François P.
