The 1850s home of José Antonio Navarro, a Tejano signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and the last remnant of the Laredito neighbourhood.
The story
José Antonio Navarro was born in San Antonio in 1795 and served in the legislatures of Coahuila y Tejas and of Mexico. In 1836 he was one of two native-born Texans to sign the Texas Declaration of Independence. Captured on the Santa Fe Expedition of 1841, he was sentenced to death and held in the prison of San Juan de Ulúa until he escaped in 1845; he then helped write the state constitution of 1845. His home, with an adobe kitchen of about 1832 and a house and store of the 1850s, is the last remnant of Laredito, the old Mexican west side. He died here in 1871.

José Antonio Navarro nació en San Antonio en 1795 y sirvió en las legislaturas de Coahuila y Tejas y de México. En 1836 fue uno de los dos nacidos en Texas que firmaron la Declaración de Independencia de Texas. Capturado en la Expedición de Santa Fe de 1841, fue condenado a muerte y encerrado en la prisión de San Juan de Ulúa hasta que escapó en 1845; después ayudó a redactar la constitución estatal de 1845. Su casa, con una cocina de adobe de hacia 1832 y una vivienda y una tienda de la década de 1850, es el último vestigio de Laredito, el antiguo lado oeste mexicano. Murió aquí en 1871.
