The stone walks, stairs and bridges one storey below downtown, built from Robert Hugman's 1929 plan after a city plan to turn the river into a storm sewer was opposed.
The story
The River Walk runs one storey below downtown along the San Antonio River, which the Payaya called Yanaguana. After a flood killed 51 people in 1921, city officials proposed turning the river into a storm sewer; opposition led to the founding of the San Antonio Conservation Society, and in 1929 the architect Robert H. H. Hugman proposed walks and shops instead. Works Progress Administration money built the first 17,000 feet of walkways and about twenty bridges in 1939. Casa Rio, by the Commerce Street bridge, opened in 1946 as the first restaurant on the river.
The walks are open 24 hours. GO RIO's narrated cruises take about 35 minutes.

El River Walk corre un piso por debajo del centro, a lo largo del río San Antonio, que los payayas llamaban Yanaguana. Después de que una inundación matara a 51 personas en 1921, las autoridades propusieron convertir el río en un desagüe pluvial; la oposición llevó a fundar la San Antonio Conservation Society, y en 1929 el arquitecto Robert H. H. Hugman propuso en cambio paseos y tiendas. En 1939 el dinero de la Works Progress Administration construyó los primeros 17,000 pies de paseos y unos veinte puentes.
